What is Co-location?

Co-location is a service which allows a company to host their computer equipment (e.g. servers, storage, and networking) at an off-site location that is specifically engineered to be always-on and always available.

For businesses contemplating building a data center vs. outsourcing, co-location provides a number of advantages. Instead of investing capital to procure, deploy and maintain data center infrastructure such as uninterruptible power systems, backup power generators, power distribution units, computer room air handlers and network routers, co-location allows your business to share these items and to purchase data center capacity as it is needed. By using the data center as a service instead of investing in high-cost depreciable assets, scarce capital can be deployed to other more revenue generating areas of your business.

Co-location also allows you to manage business performance rather than managing equipment. Expensive, hard to find, high caliber technical personnel are no longer necessary. We provide them for you. We have staff with the knowledge and experience required to operate an always-on data center. Lastly, co-location is typically covered by a Service Level Agreement (SLA). Businesses looking for peace of mind can rest assured that their IT environment will be managed to their required service level objective.

The Advantages of Co-location

The biggest advantage of co-location is the cost for bandwidth. A low cost, limited bandwidth business grade Internet connection may cost as little as $150, but for the same price or less a single server can be placed in a co-location facility that provides higher bandwidth speeds and better redundancy for the network connections.

Co-location facilities have better outage protection. At a co-location provider, you pay for power generators and backup power to protect against that type of situation.

You own the server hardware. If you decide that the machine is too slow or doesn’t have enough memory, you can simply request an upgrade to the server. You own the server software. You can install the software or tools you want to use.

If you move, you can leave the server up and running the entire time. If you host your own domains, you’ll have to either pay for two lines for some time, to move the domains to the new location or deal with outages while the servers are moved to the new location.

Xogenous provides additional security for your machines. Your server is stored and maintained in a totally secure environment.

Xogenous co-location services can be either managed or unmanaged. If you select managed services, we will manage and maintain your server for you. This is especially useful if you don’t have IT team members or your office is located far from the provider.

Xogenous offers a full range of co-location services that are engineered for reliability, flexibility and cost-efficiency tailored to your specific requirements.
